So I was reading the December 1981 issue of National Geographic and there was a Wildlife as Canon Sees It ad in it! So the whole last post is just incorrect sorry! Not sure where I got my facts from. The internet, probably. Can't always believe the internet. The featured animal, btw, was the orangutan. Since that issue was published scientists have discovered that there are actually three species of orangutan. Pongo abelii, Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo tapanuliensis. With the latter being critically endangered at about 800 remaining individuals.
