Pixies

8 Skeins of Danger tagged me and seeing as how he was instrumental in getting that meme I started going (ie he recognized the memetic potential and turned it into one) I thought I should play along. I did a similar one some years ago with Metallica so I thought I would do my other favorite band, The PIxies. Back in 1991, a bemulleted Homie Bear sat next to this really cute proto-goth in grade 11 English. We talked bands and though she didn't care for Sepultura and Death and Obituary as I did, she managed to turn me onto this cool band called The Pixies. Possibly on the very day they broke up, who knows. Though to be fair I think they broke up in 1993. The ticket stub held up by FX-7s is for one of their first shows after reforming. And I saw them again earlier this year performing Doolittle start to finish! Anyways:

Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions.

Your fear:
Break My Body

What is the best advice you have to give:
Distance Equals Rate Times Time

My soul's present condition:
Oh My Golly!

I'm Amazed

Pallas informed us at supper tonight- "Don't eat ants. Don't eat bugs. Don't eat puppies."
That's right sweetheart.
"Don't eat poo!"

Anyways, PIxies were amazing. What a show. Started with the B Sides, then played all of Doolittle, then played some encores to hit all the classics, Where Is My Mind of course, Gigantic, etc. Nothing from Bossanova though. Sokay. I think some other stuff happened last night too.
Other stuff that happened today was I went and worked on my bike with my dad. We been banging away at it, still not quite ready. Today we got the mounts for the gastank in place and nailed down with nails. Welds I should say. See?

The Pixies were fantastic, of course. They're one of those bands that sound better live than on record, not that there's anything wrong with their studio recordings. Feeling the bite of the music at your throat while your ears threaten to burst and people shoving and jumping all over you is an experience your home stereo can't really duplicate. Seeing the radiant Kim Deal, perpetually grinning and looking simultaneously thrilled and bashful is an experience not soon forgotten. Her voice has always been the ultimate expression of sexiness to me. And Frank Black, looking admittedly not very Pixie-like, demonstrated why he is seen as such a rock god. That man can scream- and his Spanish is not bad, either. It was a ball.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Jason casually mentions to me that he has tickets to the Pixies concert in April. Astonished, I said, "Wait- The Pixies are back together?"
"Yeah."
" Really? The Pixies? Original lineup?"
"Yeah."
"Wow. The Pixies. They're coming here?"
"Yeah."
"And you have tickets?"
"Yeah. Actually, I'm seeing them twice- in Calgary too."
And then I screamed and tore all my hair out because I was unaware of this momentous occasion, and the concert sold out in about five minutes, so I was out of luck. But Jay, proving himself to be some sort of Benevolent and Beautiful Bear Patron, emailed me yesterday and offered me an extra ticket. So I am going to see the Pixies this Sunday night! Yay!!! Hooray for Jay!
Here's a Rolling Stone article on the tour, another one about the live CDs of each show that they will make available immediately afterwards, and the Vue Weekly cover story. Plus a pair of Pixies-related poosts from right here at the Pooing Woods.
Wow. The Pixies.

Listening to some old-school stuff these days- Anthrax, Poosistence of Time. Laugh if you want, I don't care, it's good stuff. They do a cover of Joe Jackson's Got the Time which is still one of my favorite songs ever, even after 12 (!! We're getting old, Rowan!) years. And the instrumental Intro to Reality- beautiful. I love the bottom end on this disc.
But I also have a couple of other older CD's up by the stereo, and Mike was looking at the jacket for Nevermind, and says, "This is almost child porn." And I was like, "No it's not!" And he says, "You can see everything! It's child porn!" So then I tried to explain to him that nudity is not necessarily porn, but he wasn't buying it. And then, triumphantly, he says "What's this?" and he shows me the OTHER old CD I've been listening to lately, the Pixies' Surfer Rosa. As you know, the cover features a topless ballerina. "See? Porn." So Mike won the argument.
He wins a lot of arguments.
